During the warmer months of the year, several Officers from both the Patrol and Services Divisions patrol Hillsborough Township on Mongoose 18 speed mountain bikes. These bikes are marked with the Hillsborough Police insignia and are equipped with a flashing emergency light and a siren. Each one of the bikes is also equipped with a small 1st aid kit. Each of our Bike Patrol Officers completed a bike patrol tactics course sponsored by the Somerset County Police Academy and utilize the bikes as a proactive means of combating crime. Bike Patrol is more advantageous than general vehicle patrol, because the bikes are stealthy, and small enough to access places that patrol vehicles can not. Bike Patrol is a great means of Community Policing because it affords Officers the opportunity to work closely with citizens, which improves trust and community relations because Officers are viewed as more approachable. Currently, the Bike Patrol Officers are Officer Jay Beverett, and Officer Chris Weckenman.
The Community Policing Bureau would like to stress the importance of bicycle, skating, and skateboard safety by encouraging everyone to wear a helmet and other safety equipment when riding. As of March 1, 2006 young people, 17 years old or younger, are required by New Jersey State Law to wear a safety helmet when riding a bicycle, skateboard, or roller skating.
